Weaving Retreat 2023

University Project - Yorkshire UK

For the first project of our final year, we were encouraged to explore the theme of memories and design a space within the existing ruins of Roche Abbey's Gatehouse. The project also required us to integrate the preservation of a disappearing craft, out of the three options, I chose weaving.

As a response, I began by focusing on the concept of Wabi-sabi, embracing the site's history and the essence of the craft. I then conducted an in-depth study of weaving, its tools, processes, and the artisans behind it, to develop a design language and evoke the emotions associated with the practice. In addition, I explored the holistic relationship between master and disciple, intertwining the preservation of the craft with the transmission of knowledge, much like the traditions upheld within the Abbey. This led me to design a space that feels deeply rooted, fostering a sense of respect and connection to the site's origins.

Beyond weaving, I expanded the brief to incorporate additional activities and crafts, transforming the space into a retreat where creativity arises not from a singular passion but from the fusion of multiple disciplines, such as miniature boat-making, kayaking, music, and the surrounding natural environment. By providing dedicated spaces for these pursuits, I created a more immersive and creative experience for its users.

As I often do (not always) I have implemented my own memories in the project, enhancing the idea of memories even more with the memories of the designer. By weaving my own memories into the project, I added yet another layer of depth and complexity to the design

A glimpse into the Cote d'Azur

Here I make reference to the memories I have infused in the project with the warmth and nostalgia of my childhood—memories of Easter egg hunts on the Îles de Lérins, canyoning through the Riou or the Gorges du Verdon, and the serene feeling of napping after a swim in the Lac de Saint-Cassien or in the pool, the sun warming my skin as a gentle sea breeze rustles through the needles of the pin parasol, accompanied by the rhythmic song of cicadas. I recall the soothing murmur of village fountains, their mosaic embellishments catching the light, the lively nights of Fête de la Musique, the rugged beauty of hikes through the Vallée des Merveilles, and the golden glow of my childhood house, where the sun filtered through her orange curtains, bathing the entire room in amber hues alongside my mothers piano playing.
-
Through this project, I sought to capture and merge my love for the coastal landscapes of my region with the contrasting beauty of its forests and mountains. I drew inspiration from the colors of the pin parasol, crafting soft, shifting shades that mimic their essence while integrating the structured form of the loom. The design feeds into the imagery of sails and ropes found in the small harbors, connecting the act of weaving with the timeless craft of sail-making. Finally, the space opens up to the river, evoking the sensation of standing in the Pre-Alps or the Oliveraies, surrounded by vibrant wildflowers and carried by the same gentle breeze, creating an immersive connection between architecture and nature. If I had had the time I would've definitely added a olive oil wheel as a little hint to my childhood, surrounded by olive trees, oil and wheels.
